DISABILITY BOWLS ENGLAND UPDATE

Following the announcement from Disability Bowls England yesterday, Monday 5th August 2024, that Disability Bowls England will disband on 31st December 2024 and its activities will be managed by us and Bowls England, the EIBA would like to recognise the time, effort and work that Maggie Smith MBE, Steve Watson and the many DBE Trustees and volunteers have put in, over the last 20 years, to raise the profile of disability bowls both in England and across the world.

Our sport is now in a better place due to their efforts and dedication and bowls is more accessible now than ever before. Bowls clubs across the country are welcoming players of all disabilities and providing top-class facilities and aids to ensure our game remains accessible, diverse and future proof.

We have been honoured to work closely with Disability Bowls England over the last two years to integrate their national finals into our own finals programme, further exposing the diversity and inclusivity of our sport. Ensuring we keep this part of our national finals programme and continue to provide international representation opportunities is now a key priority for the EIBA, and this combined with our commitment to 'making indoor bowls a sport for all', forms a major part of our renewed vision and values for our association.

While we recognise the sadness felt by DBE bowlers across the country, the EIBA, in partnership with our friends at Bowls England, is committed to working hard to ensure that support for disability bowls continues to exist. Our sport faces many challenges; funding is not readily available and the pressure on our governing bodies is greater than ever before. Finding new ways to work collaboratively, to economise and enhance our offer is now of paramount importance and we will strive to provide opportunities to for all DBE members against the backdrop of our ever-evolving sport.
EIBA Chairperson, Josh Pounds, said: 'Whilst it is disappointing that Disability Bowls England will not be able to continue in its current format, this does now present us with an invaluable opportunity to work collaboratively with our friends at Bowls England to ensure that disability bowls in England thrives, and we continue to provide opportunities and support for all bowlers, regardless of their abilities or disabilities'.
