PETER GEORGE BRIMBLE
born 22 June, 1931 - died 18 June, 2023
Peter Brimble, who was an international
bowler, a winner of national titles, an England captain and team
manager, and a former president of the English Indoor Bowling
Association, died peacefully at his home in Bristol on Sunday, 18
June after a short illness - just four days short of what would have
been his 92nd birthday.
A financial adviser by profession, Peter had two sporting passions: he
was a lifelong advocate of bowls; and, by his own admission, he was
a one-eyed supporter of Bristol City Football Club.
He was an
iconic member of the City & County of Bristol Indoor Bowls Club in
the days when it was housed under the Harry Dolman stand at Ashton
Gate (home of Bristol City FC) and of the Bristol outdoor bowls
club, which nestles in the shadow of Ashton Gate. He was also a
member of Knowle outdoor bowls club in Bristol.
Peter won the
national indoor singles title in 1963, and the outdoor triples title
in 1976. He played for England indoors in 16 international series,
and in four series outdoors, and was EIBA President in the 1984-1985
season.
An Honorary Life Member of the EIBA, he served on the
Board of Directors for many years. He was also a national selector
indoors, and, as mentioned above, was a long-serving and highly
successful manager of the England indoor team.
He was proud
to be a key member of the Somerset team in that county's halcyon
days, when the 'Blackbirds' won the Middleton Cup four times in
seven years (1977, 1979, 1981 and 1984).
The bowls world will
remember Peter with affection, and will wish to convey their
sympathy to members of his family, who include his daughter Ann,
son-in-law Paul, and grandson Matthew.
Details of the funeral
arrangements will be published in due course.
