Edna Bessell MBE Steps Down from International Role
After 33 years of service to the sport of Indoor Bowls at
international level, Edna Bessell MBE has taken the decision to
step down as Team Manager of the Women's International Team.
Edna first represented Team England as a player
in 1989 and there followed an amazing 14 years of being a valuable
team member, amassing 46 caps and winning 8 British Isles
International Series titles.
As a player Edna secured two national titles, becoming National
Singles Champion in 2001 and National Triples Champion in 2005.
These successes saw her represent England in the British Isles
Championships, where she successfully won the Singles in 2001 and
reached the Triples final in 2005.
On retiring as an
international player in 2005, Edna was keen to keep involved in the
game and was appointed Team England Women's Manager the very same
year. This is a role she has dedicated herself to, demonstrating
excellent preparation and match day skills, ever since.
Under
her management England competed in 19 British Isles Series, winning
an incredible 14 titles, the last in Scotland in 2023. This is a
record which will be hard to match or beat.
In addition to her focus
on the women's team, Edna demonstrated her desire and commitment to
younger players progressing up the international ladder, by
supporting under 25 managers and serving as an U25 selector for
several years.
Alongside her work for indoor game, Edna was
equally dedicated to international bowls outdoors, too. This
commitment to the sport was appropriately recognised when Edna was
awarded an MBE for services to Bowls in 2012.
On accepting
her decision Peter Thompson, Chief Executive of the EIBA Ltd, said
"On behalf of the EIBA I wish to thank Edna for what she has done
for international Bowls over the last 33 years, both as a player and
official. There is no doubt she has represented England with
distinction and pride, along with being respected by players and
officials across the country and world, throughout her long career."
He added "As we now move forward with a new Team England
Manager, Andy Thomson MBE, working across both the men's and women's
senior international teams, we are certain that he can only build
upon the legacy Edna has left behind. All at the EIBA wish Edna all
the very best in the future and hope that she can now find time for
herself and her family."
