Andy
has represented England for 38 years and captain of the team for the
last 15 years. He made his debut in the International Series in Cardiff
1981 and his last appearance was in March this year in Paisley,
Scotland.
During this period, he has appeared a record 114 times
and been in the winning team on 20 occasions, 9 as captain.
Andy
was initially selected because of his skill to play draw bowls. However,
he quickly developed the ability to play all shots and great tactical
awareness. Consequently, Andy became an automatic choice for the team
and earned the respect of his team mates and opponents past and present.
The EIBA recognises that for Andy to play and maintain this high
standard required for International Bowls over such a long period of
time shows his dedication, exceptional ability and passion for the sport
itself. This achievement and continuous representation of England will
be extremely hard to beat.
On receiving the news Tony Horobin,
England Men’s Team Manager, said “I have worked closely with Andy for
over a decade and enjoyed every moment of our success and shall miss his
drive and determination both on and off the green. He is a great player,
team man and friend. I hope that he will be able to contribute to the
International team in the future.”
Peter Thompson, Chief
Executive, of the EIBA added “England has been very fortunate to have
had Andy involved in our International team for so long. Whilst saddened
to lose a player of his ability and leadership it is also the time to
reflect on what Andy has achieved at International level and be proud of
his achievement, both personally and for the Country.
In
addition, Andy has been a great ambassador for the sport at this level
both on and off the rink. We are delighted that we will be able to
benefit from his experience as he continues as our U25 Men’s Team
Manager.”
In announcing his retirement Andy commented “I am
extremely proud and honoured to have represented England as a player and
captain. In doing this I have had the full support of my family, Club
and fellow players, for which I am sincerely grateful for.
Whilst
performing at the highest level for your Country is a wonderful personal
achievement it is the ability to be part of a team and being able to
assist / guide new players at this level.”
He concluded by saying
“Although my International career is now over I will still be playing
competitively via the World Bowls Tour and EIBA National Competitions
with Cyphers IBC. As well as helping the next generation of
International Bowlers as the EIBA’s U25 Men’s International Team
Manager.”
