Bowled over by gardening
Official EIBA partners Just Retirement Limited are taking their love
of active pursuits outside: to host a show garden at The Hampton Court
Palace Flower Show. They have teamed up with award-winning garden designer
Tracy Foster to create ‘a garden for every retiree’ and have even written a
book to share their pearls of wisdom. So if you’ve been meaning to make more
of your garden but aren’t quite sure where to start, perhaps Tracy’s wise
words can help…
Tracy’s top tips for making the most of your garden:
“The garden has the potential to be so
many things: a place to indulge your hobbies and interests; somewhere to
relax and enjoy peace and quiet or somewhere to spend time with your loved
ones. Whatever your passion, your garden can be designed to indulge it. Here
are ten top tips to start you off:
•
|
Spend some time designing exactly what you want to get from your
garden - good planning will save you time and money in the future. |
•
|
Design a garden that appeals to as many senses as possible. That
way it will provide you with a haven for enjoyment throughout the
year. |
•
|
Raised beds can make your life easier and provide impromptu
seating at parties!
|
•
|
Make the most of vertical space in small gardens – it will look
beautiful and make your garden feel bigger. |
•
|
Adapted tools
can save you a sore back or tired arms – do your research to find out which
ones suit you best.
|
•
|
Growing your own veg can save you money, increase the amount of
exercise you do and get more healthy food into your diet. If you are
a novice, start small with salad crops and slowly build towards
growing fruit and veg that pay their way such as forced rhubarb and
asparagus.
|
•
|
If you enjoy watching wildlife in your garden choose plants that
will welcome them in – birds love berries such as holly, hawthorn,
honeysuckle and cotoneaster.
|
•
|
Gardening with the grandchildren can ignite an early passion for
gardening and create treasured memories. There are many creative
garden activities that will keep youngsters entertained for hours.
|
•
|
If you struggle to get outside, think about placing some
beautiful features near the back door so that you can see them all
year round.
|
•
|
Don’t forget to look after yourself while you are looking after
the garden. Tool manufacturers advise that we spend some time
warming up before we get stuck in! |
