Day 4 report
The business end of the competition started on Thursday with the final
group matches, Quarter Finals of the Gents and Ladies Singles and the
final of the Mixed Pairs Championship.
Mixed Pairs Final
For the first time ever an all Irish pair are the World Under 25 Mixed
Pairs champions.
Catherine Beattie had won the title twice before
in the company of Wayne Hogg (Scotland) and Cliodhna Boyce (now Eadie)
won partnered by Dan De La Mare.
This time the pairing of Zoe
Minish and Adam McKeown triumphed in a Tiebreak end to capture the title
ahead of Paris Baker (Tonga) and Jordan Driscoll (England).
The
first set of the contest was finely balanced at 4-3 to the Irish pair
after five ends of the first set when the Tongan/Welsh pair stepped into
top gear and won the remaining four ends of the set to win 10-4.
The second set was going the way of the Tonga/Welsh pairing as they led
5-0 after three ends when the match turned. Adam drew two shots to get
the Irish pair back into the contest and they then scored all the
remaining ends of the set to win it 9-5.
The Tiebreak end saw the
Irish take the jack and bring the mat up and Zoe played an excellent
first bowl. Which lay for most of the end. Adam took some advice from
Irish coach Neil Booth and covered with his last bowl. Jordan then
attacked on the back hand and trailed the jack which went to the bowl
that Adam had placed on the rink.

Gents Singles – Quarter Finals
Bradley Buchan (Scotland) put in a stellar performance in the Quarter
Finals to defeat 2015 champion Ryan Atkins (England).
Jason Banks
(Scotland) was also dominant in his quarter final defeating Mike Brain
from Wales.
Current British Isles Under 25 Champion Connor Cinato
ended the hopes of a hat trick of Scottish wins in the Quarter Finals
when he triumphed in straight sets.
The only match that went to a
tiebreak was the intriguing tie between Stephen Kirkwood (Ireland) and
Jack Breen (Wales). Jack edged a tight first set with a great last end
to hold the advantage. Stephen who beat defending World champion Robert
Kirkwood to win the Irish title last season then controlled the second
set to force a Tiebreak end. The Welsh player played a brilliant first
two bowls to hold the advantage before Stephen attacked and opened up
the head. Jack then played a bowl that covered the jack and lay less
than six inches away and Stephen failed to beat it with his last bowl.
Bradley Buchan (Scotland) beat Ryan Atkins (England) 10-1, 11-5
Jason Banks (Scotland) beat Mike Brain (Wales) 9-1, 12-2 Jack Breen
(Wales) beat Stephen Kirkwood (Ireland) 8-7, 2-11, 1-0 Connor Cinato
(England) beat John Meikle (Scotland) 8-7, 11-2
Ladies
Singles – Quarter Finals Lauren Gowen (Wales) continued an
impressive run of form and ended the hopes of Hong Kong of taking
another title home this season.
The match with defending champion
Nicole Rogers (England) and Rebecca Houston (Scotland) who was
celebrating her eighteenth birthday yesterday was close throughout.
Nicole managed to win three of the last four ends to win the first set
and was also able to just edge the second set and take her place in the
semi final.
Paris Baker (Tonga) continued her rich vein of form
against Natasha Russell (New Zealand). The first set was tied at 6 shots
all and Paris then went on to control most of the second set before
Natasha made a late challenge that came up just short.
Jessica
Srisamruaybai (Australia) was dominant in the first set against Lara
Reaney from Ireland and looked to be heading to a straight sets win when
lying a perfect two in the final end of the second set. Lara though
produced a brilliant drive to split both bowls off the head and win the
set. In a nervy tiebreak though the Australian player composed herself
to play the match winning bowl and secure a semi final against Lauren
Gowen on Friday.
Pairs Baker (Tonga) beat Natasha Russell (New
Zealand) 6-6, 10-6 Nicole Rogers (England) beat Rebecca Houston
