Mixed
Pairs – Semi Finals The final session of play on Wednesday
saw two outstanding Mixed Pairs semi finals.
The Tongan / Welsh
duo of Paris Baker and Jordan Driscoll took on the Australia team of
Jessica Srisamruaybai and Mason Lewis.
Paris and Jordan made a
great start to the first set and led 6-0 and 8-4 before the Aussie pair
fought back and secured two doubles to tie the set at 8 shots all.
Jessica and Mason looked to be in control of the second set building
up a 5-0 lead before Paris and Jordan scored on the next four end to
lead 7 shots to 5.
In the eight end Mason played a brilliant last
bowl to secure a two for Australia to tie the set at 7 shots all with
one end to play.
The final end saw Australia lie the shot
throughout until the very last bowl from Jordan drew in on the back hand
side to lie less than a foot away from the jack and take Paris and
Jordan to the Gold Medal match.
The other semi final between Zoe
Minish (Ireland) and Eilidh Weir and John Meikle (Scotland) was equally
dramatic.
Eilidh and John made most of the running in the first
set and converted a 5-2 lead into a 10-4 final set score.
The
second set saw the Irish pair play some great bowls to open up a 8-1
lead and although the Scots fought back winning four of the last five
ends they finished on the wrong end of a 8-6 scoreline.
The
tiebreak was its usual tense and dramatic conclusion to the game.
Eilidh lay after the first five bowls of the end had been played.
Adam then played a fore hand bowl around the front shot bowl and moved
the jack to lie shot around 8 inches from the jack.
John elected
to play slightly over the weight on the forehand hoping to catch a
Scottish bowl or reach the shot bowl. He was higher than intended and
moved Eilidh’s wider bowl into the head and luckily lay shot.
This meant Adam faced match against him with one bowl to come. And he
played an inch perfect back hand timer to turn the Scottish bowl out of
the head and to spark jubilation in the Irish camp.
The semi
finals were live streamed using Facebook Live through the IIBC Facebook
page and the final of the Mixed Pairs will also be streamed at 5.30pm on
Thursday.
Paris Baker (Tonga) and Jordan Driscoll (Wales) beat
Jessica Srisamruaybai and Mason Lewis 8-8, 8-7
Zoe Minish and
Adam McKeown (Ireland) beat Eilidh Weir and John Meikle (Scotland) 4-10,
8-6, 1-0
