Day 1 report
The 22nd playing
of the IIBC World Under 25 Championships had a successful opening on
Monday evening in front of an appreciative North East of England
audience.
With a rebranding of the old WIBC name to the IIBC last
season and a close working partnership with World Bowls this season sees
the highest number of competing nations in the event with 14 countries
participating.
Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, France, New
Zealand, Pakistan, Switzerland and Tonga join in with the UK based
nations of England, Guernsey, Ireland, Scotland and Wales to bring 40 of
the best young players in the World together to compete for the Jimmy
Davidson and Hilary King MBE trophies which will be presented to the
World Champions on Friday.
Day One saw the Opening Ceremony take
place with IIBC World President Sheila Storey welcoming everyone and
Councillor David Cook the Lord Mayor of Newcastle wishing everyone a
Civic Reception.
The action was focussed on the Mixed Pairs with
two sessions of play. The Mixed Pairs is a Knockout Competition with 20
pairs playing off for the title.
The highlight of the prelim
round was the match between Mason Lewis and Jessica Srisamruaybai from
Australia and Jack Breen and Lowri Powell from Wales. The Australians
took the first set 8-5 before the Welsh took a tight second set 5-2. In
the Tiebreak end Jessica drew the match winning shot to put the
Australians through to a first round clash with Shirs Eshel (Israel) and
Jason Banks (Scotland)
The first round match between Shirs Eshel
(Israel) and Jason Banks (Scotland) and Jessica Srisamruaybai and Mason
Lewis (Australia) was the last match completed in the day and saw an
outstanding bowl to win the contest. The Israeli / Scottish combination
scored a brilliant two to win the first set 6-5 before the Asutralian
pair upped the ante by winning the second set 6-2. In the tiebreak end
Jessica lay the shot after the front ends had played before Jason
secured the shot by turning the shot bowl out of the head. With the
final bowl of the end Mason delivered an inch perfect bowl to turn Jason
off the jack and lay the winning shot 8 inches away.
