British
Isles Championships and International Series Stanley, Co Durham from 11th
to 19th March 2011
Two teams of junior bowlers will be having their style
and technique scrutinised by some of the best players around when they meet
during the British Isles International Series and Championships in the
County next week.
Out of more the 300 youngsters from the region who
took part in taster sessions, the two teams from East Stanley and
St.Joseph's, Stanley are ready to do battle as as warm up to one of the
finals at the British Isles Championships and International Series.
“When we went out to the schools, the youngsters were very, very keen to try
out the game” said Sheila Storey whose job it was to introduce the indoor
bowls game to people more used to skateparks rather than the green of the
bowling rink.
“We had to take the sport to the schools with ‘New Age
Bowls’ and once we got a few playing everyone wanted to have a go.”
The school teams were boiled down to two who will play during the
international bowls event – their own final being on the 16 March.
Sheila, who is also a Director of English Indoor Bowling Association Ltd was
quick to praise the hard work that has gone on during the development
programme: “I would like to think that what has been achieved here in the
North East over the last ten months in this project will be rolled out
across the England.
Peter Thompson, Chief Operating Executive, from
the EIBA, the governing body for the sport in England said: “I am sure that
the more experienced players that will be watching the youngsters on the
rink will be encouraging them all the way. It is, after all, a great way of
introducing the next generation to this great sport.”

underway on Friday 11 March for three days then the International
