CLARA JOHNS TROPHY
What a fantastic finale to the England International campaign for
2009/10. With both the Junior Boys and Junior Girls winning their
respective international series earlier in the year and then the Senior
Men’s team regaining the R.B.Hilton Trophy at the beginning of the week,
the expectations for an England clean sweep were immense at the Dewars
Centre, Perth, Scotland.
At the Opening Ceremony of the BIWIBC
International series the England team, led by their President Irene
Godfrey, the ladies Senior International team marched onto the green to
the tune of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ feeling very proud and honoured to
be displaying the new attractive England International Uniform.
Although England started slowly in their first match against Wales, they
soon got into their stride and displayed their skill, determination and
flare to eventually beat Wales by 132-96.
With a tactical switch of
two front players in one rink against Ireland, another sterling
performance was given by the England team to win by 48 shots.
‘Here
we go again’ - the final session of the series with the battle between
Scotland and England; With both Countries having won both of their
previous matches a win by either team would bring the Clara Johns Trophy
back to their respective Country. Again the selectors decided to make a
tactical change by bringing a previous junior international into the
England team.
England started the game with great enthusiasm and
determination which proved very successful and were 15 shots up after 10
ends despite the excitement, noise and singing of the Scottish
supporters at the packed Dewars Centre. The team displayed great flare
and skill throughout the game and were a credit to the game of bowls for
England. Although the whole team played brilliantly throughout, the rink
of Debbie Stavrou dampened the spirits of the Scottish No 1, Margaret
Latham, to win by 24-9. Final score: England 126-94.
The senior
ladies international squad were a credit to England – a brilliant result
and a fantastic team performance.
