Report on
 National Championship Finals

National Fours Championship 1999/2000

played at Melton Mowbray from 1st to 3rd April 2000.
Full Team details appear at the end of this Report

The Final was played Monday 3rd April, between Pinewood Park and Desborough. In a tight game with rarely more than one shot between the teams, Desborough picked up a 4 and a 3 in the last eight ends to win 20-18.

The victory was especially pleasing for two of the Desborough team, Len Essex who had in previous years reached the Semi-Finals of the Mixed Pairs, Triples and Pairs and Brett Long who had reached the Semi-Final stage of the Triples in 1991 & 1998.

The Championship had started on Saturday, with over 400 spectators packed into the Melton & District I. B.C. for the first day of the traditional National Championships Week.

In the morning First Round matches, Perdiswell, had a close game with Colchester, winning the last two ends to take the match: 21-20.

In similar fashion, Kingsthorpe won the last end to beat Bridgwater BCL 17-15, whilst Chipping Norton needed an extra end to beat Welford 21-20.

The afternoon session provided further tight First Round games, with Plymouth Civil Service winning 23 -22, despite dropping Seven shots on the 18th End against Dorchester.

Cambridge Park
recovered from 16-10 down at the 11th End to win 21-19 against Metrodome.

Tye Green
completed the teams moving into the Second Round, when they held off the challenge of Barwell winning 19-14.

The matches of the Second Round were between Spalding who lost 18-21 to Mote Park and Chipping Norton who beat Scunthorpe 18-14 in a game that lasted four and a half hours.

The Quarter-Finals started on Sunday morning, with Kingsthorpe nearly recovering from a position of 17-5 down at 11 ends, losing 25-20 to Chipping Norton. A Count of 4 on the 18th end ensured that Westlecot beat Cambridge Park 21-15, whilst Pinewood Park  left it until the 20th end to take a 5 and run out winners 22-16 against Mote Park.

Pinewood Park beat Chipping Norton 20-8 in their Semi-Final following excellent play from Skip, Mervyn King, and the Skip of Desborough's, Bret Long, drew shot with his last wood of the 21st end to win the other Semi-Final 18-17, against Westlecot.
